Fri. February 5, 2010:
We covered lots of water and had a ton of fun doing it. We didn't catch any big Tuna, but we enjoyed some inshore action and the change of pace. The Marlin were up and swimming around and provided some excitement for us. We picked up a nice Pargo and some small Tuna and some other variety fishes for the day. Tomorrow we will be back out on the banks in hopes that the Cows want to come up and play. Wish us luck...

Thur. February 4, 2010:
For the third day in a row we had a blast catching Tuna in the 70-140 lb range. The sign of big fish still has not shown up here, although we did see a few spots that looked to be the bigger ones, but they had no desire in coming up. This is a light load of 16 passengers and they have put the wood these mid range Tuna landing 121 of them in three days. With our fill on these fish we are making a move tonight to take a look in a different area. We have lots of time on our side and the weather is getting better, so we feel that the Cows will come up and play during the next week. PS... Chuck Houston would like to say hi to Clarressa and Vanessa as he caught a big one this afternoon.

Wed. February 3, 2010:
A great day here on the lower banks. We had fish going all day long today. The action was just short of yesterdays hit of 51 fish, with 43 today, but a better grade. The fish were between 50-120 lbs. We did see some sign of bigger fish late this afternoon, but were not fortunate enough to get a bite from a jumbo. That makes two steady days of fishing on this mid-grade fish with a handful going over 100
lbs today. We plan to sit it out and see if the big-uns show themselves tomorrow. Today's photo is of Marilyn Reece and her big fish today caught a fly lined sardine and crewman Mike Meredith giving a hand to Dimitri Kalsas with one of his nice Tuna caught today. PS... Tues. February 2, 2010:
We had a fun day here on the lower banks. We started the day off right with Tuna on the corner for the first hour and then kept a pick bite going all day long. The fish were all in the 40-65 lb range. We did hook into one good one that chewed through the line after an hour fight in the evening. The weather today was very, very wet. The rain came down in sheets and squalls that were simply amazing. We have not seen that much rain in this region in one day in a long time. We will be here again tomorrow with hopes of the big ones coming through.

After two days of travel with seminars and rigging we are ready for Cow Town. We left on Sat. 1/30/10 on our Rod Rack 15 day trip with Steve Volkers (owner The Rod Rack) targeting big Tuna. We have chosen to start our trip on the beach in search of the Big Cows. The weather has been great so far and we are looking forward to the 10 days we will be able to hunt in the pastures. We will arrive at our first destination at 4:00 am and begin the quest for big fish. Wish us luck... "The Intrepid Team"

Tues. January 19, 2010:
The weather is picking up and the ride is not as smooth as yesterday, but we are enjoying the stabilizers and the heavy ride of this vessel as we push through it. Yesterday we were treated to a great Whale show on our way up. Caught in one of the photos is a rare double tail shot. Today we were treated to our "Brunch On The Intrepid" which has become tradition on our long trips with Chef Javier and Hoodad himself preparing the feast. We scrubbed up the boat and stowed away all the gear yesterday anticipating the weather today, so we are all in movie and Sat TV mode.
We want to give a big thanks and job well done to John Bakos and WestCoastFishing.com for their sponsorship of this 12 day trip. Thanks also to all the sponsors who continually give their support to Team Intrepid....Team Marineusa.com, Shake Rattle & Troll radio 1100am AZ, Arizona Boating and Watersports, Proswimbaits.com, Avet Reels, Izorline, Jerry Brown Spectra, Seeker Rods, Seaguar Flourocarbon, Mustad, and FiveStar Fish processing. Thanks everyone..ETA 7:00 am Wednesday morning.

Mon. January 18, 2010:
Enjoying the great weather (for now) coming up the line. We have the great atmosphere one experiences when heading home with a big load of Giants. Everyone is re-living the battles and the glory of their catch and getting some much needed R&R. This was one of those trips you tell yourself at home "I should have gone on that one." Of all the days in the lower zone we had two that stand out as GREAT DAYS on the big fish, one with 10 cows and another with 8 cows and one Super, along with many fish in the 130-190 lb range. Our 18 anglers ended up with 25 Cows and 1 Super Cow and somewhere between 46-52 130-190 lb range along with lots of the 60-80 class fish.. The conditions are perfect for more great Cow action on the Banks in the next couple of weeks, so if you want a shot, now is the time. Who knows how long they will stick around. We have a couple of spots left on our Rod Rack 15 day leaving on Sat. Jan 30th. This is the perfect time to get below and score on some Hoo's and big Tuna at the Bank, then come up for a couple of days in Cow Town. "The Intrepid Team"

Sun. January 17, 2010:
Hoodad reporting in tonight. We finished up in style with EPIC ( a word that maybe gets used too much) fishing.
As I reflect on the day, and the trip overall, it was an outstanding day. From before daylight until we pulled the anchor at dark, you could literally hook a good sized Tuna at any time during the day. We had seven going first thing in the morning and got them all through good crew work and the anglers working together very well. If my count is right, I think we caught 7 over 200 just today. We caught a lot of that "Teenage" sized fish, 140-190 lbs that will fool even the best of us thinking we have a much larger fish hooked.
Chef Javier and I both feel this was an excellent trip, probably the best we have both ever been on. You jump on a trip and at the start we are all strangers except for knowing a few from other trips. And as the trip progressed, we became a bunch of new friends. We had anglers hook and handing Cows. A very unselfish group, everyone cheering at the taping of the fish, and one of my fishing career goals was almost accomplished: Everyone on the boat landing a cow! We almost did that. Only one angler did not catch a Tuna over two hundred pounds, and that angler chose to not land a Cow for his own reasons. Another highlight today was Jamie Massion landing a 213 lb Cow on his Accurate Twin Spin 50, Spinning reel ! Way to go Jamie!!
All in all, I know I made a bunch of new friends, enjoyed lots of laughs, caught a few fish, and enjoyed mostly beautiful weather. IMO, it just doesn't get much better than this.
Many more pics and a list of the Cow catchers to follow in the next couple of days..

Sat. January 16, 2010:
We had a GREAT day today ! After yesterdays adventure to Mag Bay to escape the bad weather and to do some repair work, make some bait and have dinner in the calm, we made it back out to the cow grounds around 4 am. The weather went down to 5 knots and the seas mellowed out so the fish came up. At first we didn't have much sign so we made a move and got re-positioned in the hot zone! We had up to five cows hanging at a time today. We kept at least one going all day long and ended up with some real Jumbos! Big fish honors today go to Jack Gibson for his monster of a fish Super Cow at 352 lbs, next to John Bakos for his 284 lb Tuna and Fishybuzz (David Tang) for his new personal best 246 lb Tuna. Father and daughter team of Jack Gibson and Tina Alafa teamed up for their two cows at 352 and 225 lbs.. It was a very fun day for us and we kept busy all the way into the dark. We will catch some bait tonight and give it one last day tomorrow before heading up the line for home.. Wish us luck.

Thur. January 14, 2010:
We had some fish right at daylight with 3-4 going, then it turned into a slow pick bite with the all show and little go mode. We did get some nice fish between 80-140 lbs and one big one over 200 lbs. As the weather picked up, so did our anchor. We had three fish going and boils all around when mother nature decided to force a move upon us. Oh well thats fishing. The wind has picked up and the seas are getting bigger by the minute, so we will see what tomorrow brings.
Pics of the day are Sherwood Kingsley and a big Tuna coming over the rail and Kevin Fitler and his Jumbo.

Wed. January 13, 2010:
A slower day today with the exception of a few flurries on smaller grade fish in the 40-110 lb range. We did get a few good ones and had a few more heart breaks again today. There was one fish in particular that fought it's way to freedom right at dark that was a real beast and in the end it swam away a free giant. It was a great show as far as big fish blowing up all around all day long though. We will be here again tomorrow and hope they get back in the biting mood for us. Wish us luck.

Tues. January 12, 2010:
Hoodad here. Since we had such a great day today, Kevin is busy busy busy getting another RSW well chilling down just in case.......
We worked our way to another area last night, had a much better looking screen on the machines and we caught some squid for bait. Things just looked and felt like it was a positive change.
And indeed it was a better day. We had some heartbreaks, but we also had some fantastic fishing on 160-277 lb Tuna. When the smoke all cleared, the day's total was 17 good Tuna, with ten of them making the Cow mark, ringing Chad's Cow bell!
Losses? We had some. Equipment failures, hook pulls, just name it and we had it. But such is the nature of the beast when chasing trophy Tuna.
As one long range skipper told me early on in my long range career : " What would we do if we caught them all?"
So obviously we'll stay here and enjoy this flat calm beautiful weather at least another day. Our bait is great, we are very thankful for the superb sardines that Everingham Brother's provides for us to use. If you ask me, the sardine is about as perfect a bait as you could use down here on this area's Yellowfin Tuna stocks.
Wish us luck in continuing on with our fishing, and perhaps even some more catching will take place.

Tues. Jan 12, 2010:
Early report from the Intrepid...We got on a spot right at dark and got the anchor down. They stuck with us through the night and are biting a little today. So far we boated 5 Cows biggest at 234 lbs and 3 fish under the 200 lb mark. We have one hanging at the moment with lots of fish blowing up all around us. We will get some pics and report again tonight!

Mon. Jan 11, 2010:
Our first day down here on the lower banks was a tough one. We had fish under the boat for most of the day, but they were not interested in coming up and chewing in the least. In the afternoon we pulled the hook and went out on the hunt and were able to locate a school associated with some black porpoise. We got over them and drifted with them for awhile, but again they would not bite. We caught only two Dorado and one Striped Marlin (released) for our day. We have lots of time left and see good sign, so we are sure our time will come in the next few days. Wish us luck.

Sun. January 10, 2010:
We made a stop this afternoon at our Grouper hole. The big bottom dwellars did not disappoint us. We had many hookups on the Skipjack's. Some of the Yellowtails we hooked also got hammered by the Groupers. We managed to get 9 on board along with plenty of Yellows. Big fish today goes to Dan Hannegan with an 80-90 lb Gulf Grouper. We got a visit by a Giant Sea Turtle, one of the biggest we have seen maybe 150-200 lbs, and managed to get a couple of pics of him. Enjoy! Dan wishes to say hello to his wife Annette!! It was a fun couple of hours for us and we are now back underway towards the lower banks. "The Intrepid Team"

Sat. January 9, 2010:
We made a quick stop at San Benitos Island to break up the travel time today. We had some Rock Cod and Yellowtail for our efforts and got back underway. The sunset tonight is breath taking and we hope the picture shows just how beautiful it was. We will head South all day tomorrow with our eyes open and our ears on the Lower Banks. The timing is good for this one and we hope for some great action on the big ones. Wish us luck. "The Intrepid Team"

Fri. Jan 8, 2010:
We are back out on our WestCoastFishing.com 12 day trip. Jon Bakos and the gang are here and we are heading South in beautiful weather. We cleared the point around 12:30 pm today and should be in good shape to make some stops along the way to Cow Town. We will be rigging and giving seminars tomorrow to make sure everyone is well prepared for the battles ahead.

We finished up in style with some good Rockcod fishing this morning. Everyone had lots of fun bringing up some nice Reds and Lings to add to their catch. After the morning at the rail Javier and J.J treated us once again to the Brunch on the Intrepid. J.J pulled out his Guitar and gave us a Blues hour in the lounge for some classic entertainment. We had our fill and are now on our way home with a fine catch and some great memories made with new friends. We want to thank our friends from Texas who came all the way out to the West Coast to join us for a chance at some Cow Tunas and caught what they were after. We arrive at the dock tomorrow with Two potential IGFA All Tackle World Records on board. First one is a Junior All Tackle Yellowfin Tuna Record for Jefferey Tedmori and second is an All Tackle Grouper Record for David Choate. What a trip!!

Sun. Jan 3, 2010:
We are traveling up the line in beautiful weather with a great feeling on the boat. We made a few stops for some Yellows and some nice sized Calico Bass along the way. Tomorrow we will make a stop for some Rock Cod fishing to finish off the trip. The trip has been a big hit with our guest from the Cow fishing to the WFO Yellowtail stops and the Giant Grouper caught yesterday, to the fun atmosphere we have here on the Intrepid. Today was a blast, just like all the days spent this trip. The perfect weather all week long helped out as well. The Cow count this trip was 12 over 200 lbs and another 38 between 130-190 lbs. That brings our score to 66 Cows and 7 Super Cows so far for the year. We are stoked to say the least!! Thank you to all our friends who have made it happen this year and a BIG CONGRATS TO YOU ALL!!
We would like to thank Jack Nielson and Accurate Reels for this sponsored trip. The reels worked flawlessly and made this catch a reality for many first time Cow Hunters. The open faced Accurates are easy to work and very strong when pulling on the Giants. Thanks again Jack. "The intrepid Team"
Our ETA is 5:30 am Tuesday morning.

Sat. January 2, 2010:
We had a fantastic day fishing Yellows and Yellowfin Tuna in the 30-45 lb range. We started off with a good bite on nice grade Yellows in the 20 lb class along with several hook-ups on large Grouper. We then made a move North and found some Porpoise holding the nice Yellowfin for more Tuna action. As we found our afternoon spot the bite went wide open on the Yellows for a couple of hours. There were guys flylining Skipjack for grouper with exciting bites at times, but landing these giants was tough to do. In the evening, Chartermaster David Choate hooked up with a Skipjack and landed a HUGE GROUPER to finish off our GREAT day of fishing! Congrats Choate!!!

Fri. January 1, 2010:
We had a slower day today, the fish were here they just didn't like the conditions and didn't respond well. We did catch some more Cows and a few of the 130-160 lb class . The big fish of the day was caught by William Jamison at 268 lbs and the next biggest was by Terry Williamson at 255 lbs. We spent four days on the Cow grounds and are leaving with 50 Tuna between 130-280 lbs with 12 fish over 200 lbs to show for our efforts. We will be heading up the line to target some variety style fishing along the way in the next couple of days.

Thur. December 31, 2009:
What a way to spend the last day of the year! We caught Big Yellowfin all day long today. Our bite started in the grey and ended in the grey. There was a mixed bag of fish today, with Tuna in all sizes being caught throughout the day. The stand out fish today were for Dane Barriault with a 280 and Javier Salguero with a 277 lb Tuna. In all we landed 26 Tuna today that had 5 more Cows in it and the majority in the 130-190 lb class. There were some losses however for all the normal reasons, pulled hooks, chew offs and breaking line. It was a fun day here on the Intrepid. We will give it another go round tomorrow. Why not start the new year off catching some cows!! There are still a few spots available on upcoming trips. Happy New Year From "The Intrepid Team"
|
Wed. December 30, 2009:
We had a good day fishing Trophy Yellowfin. We had 18 fish from 130-228 lbs . We ended up with five fish over the 200 lb mark for the day. The sign of life is getting better by the hour and we will be making bait again tonight and giving the Cows another battle tomorrow. The highlight of our day came when 16 year old Jefferey Tedmori landed his first Cow at 202 lbs and then again about one hour later he got his second Cow of the day at 221 lbs. This is a potential Junior All Tackle World Record! Way to go Jeff!!!

Tues. December 29, 2009:
We traveled all day yesterday while rigging and getting ready for the big ones. We arrived at 12:30 last night and picked our spot. The bait catching was tough with the full moon approaching, but we stuck it out and put the work in. The fishing today was slow with only a handful of Big Yellowfin landed. There were some Marlin caught as well to add some excitement during the slow periods. Highlight of the day came at the end with 89 year old Norman Moltar (Stormin Normin) catching a Big One. We are choosing to stay put and try again tomorrow to see if things turn around and we are able to boat more of these trophy's.

Sun. December 27, 2009:
We made a stop today for some big Yellows on the Yo-Yo iron that was a
nice change of pace to the travel day. We will be enjoying some fresh
Yellowtail prepared by Chef Javier for dinner. We still have a long way
to go, so we are back underway and headed south. The weather is perfect
and we hope it will stay this way for the next week. Wish us luck.
